5 Card Omaha

5 Card Omaha is a poker variant grown straight out of Omaha, with one extra private card added to the mix. Each player receives five hole cards of their own, and five community cards are dealt face-up on the board for the whole table to work with.

It is Omaha with a fifth ingredient stirred into a recipe that was already fairly busy, which means more possible hand combinations to read on every deal.

The defining rule is precise: you use exactly two of your hole cards together with exactly three community cards to build your five-card hand. No more, no less.

Bets, Payouts & Rules

Play runs clockwise, with the button moving one seat along after each hand. Betting starts with the player under the gun, sitting immediately clockwise of the big blind. Each betting round continues until all players still in the hand have matched bets in the pot.

The Betting Rounds

  • Pre-Flop: players look at their five hole cards and choose to fold, call the big blind or raise, with the big blind treated as a live bet for that round.
  • The Flop: the first three community cards are dealt face-up, and a fresh round of betting follows, beginning with the active player clockwise of the button.
  • The Turn: the fourth community card lands face-up, followed by another round of betting.
  • The River: the fifth and final community card is dealt, and the last betting round takes place.
  • The Showdown: the final aggressor shows first, or if nobody bet on the river, the player immediately clockwise of the button reveals first.

Deciding The Hand

  • The best five-card hand, built with two hole cards and three board cards, takes the pot.
  • If two or more hands are identical, the pot is divided equally between them.
  • Once the pot is awarded, the button shifts clockwise and a new hand begins.

Features & Bonus Rounds

Pot Limit 5 Card Omaha

The most widely played format. The minimum bet matches the big blind, and the ceiling is the size of the pot, calculated as the active pot plus all bets on the table plus the amount the player must call before raising. A raise must be at least as large as the previous bet or raise in that round, and there is no cap on how many raises a round can hold.

No Limit 5 Card Omaha

The same core rules apply, with the minimum bet again set at the big blind and the upper limit set by the chips a player has on the table. Raises must match or exceed the previous bet or raise, and again there is no cap on the number of raises.

5 Card Omaha Hi/Lo

Also known as 5 Card Omaha 8-or-better, 5 Card Omaha 8 or 5 Card Omaha/8, this variant splits the pot between the highest and the lowest qualifying hands. It gives the game an entirely different rhythm, and the scruffiest looking low hand suddenly gets treated like visiting royalty.

Cash Games And Tournaments

Pot Limit tables are referred to by the size of their blinds, and 5 Card Omaha is also available in tournament form for players who prefer a structured field.

Taste & Feel

This is a reading game more than a rushing one. Five hole cards fan out in front of you, each of them apparently convinced it is the important one, while the board fills in three cards at a time and quietly rearranges what your hand actually is.

The two-and-three rule keeps things honest, so the interest sits in spotting which pairing genuinely works rather than which one looks tidy at a glance. Take your time with it: the button will still be making its clockwise lap whenever you fancy pulling up a seat.
