Texas Hold ‘Em is a popular poker game option these days. It has a fairly

simple concept and players only need a basic understanding of the rules in

order to get involved in the game and start winning. If you are new to

Hold ‘Em, here are a few basic terms that you should understand.

Blinds:

Texas Hold ‘Em begins with blind bets, rather than an ante. The first two

players to the left of the dealer make blind bets prior to any cards being

dealt.

Burn:

Burn refers to the top card on the deck, which is discarded prior to

dealing to prevent cheating.

Button:

The nickname given to the dealer.

Pocket Cards:

The two cards that each player is dealt in Hold ‘Em. These cards are kept a

secret from the other players at the table and are sometimes referred to

as Hole Cards.

Check:

A player may skip his or her turn without calling or raising the current

bet. This is called a check.

Flop:

Flop refers to the act of the dealer displaying the first three

community cards on the table.

Pre-Flop:

Any action in Hold ‘Em that takes place before the flop is referred to as

pre-flop.

Fourth Street/Turn:

This term refers to the fourth community card that is dealt in in

a round.

Fifth Street/River:

This term refers to the fifth and final community card that is dealt

in a round.

Showdown:

A showdown is the way that the winner of Hold ‘Em is determined. The

showdown takes place when all of the players at the table reveal their

cards.
